Substack LIVE - The Attention Crisis: Weapons of Mass Distraction - this Friday Feb 20th, 1 pm PT / 4 pm ET
The attention crisis and what we can do about it, featuring Princeton Professor Graham Burnett and Harvard Shorenstein fellow (and my wife) Julia Allison
Dear friends,
This Friday, February 20th at 1 pm PT / 4 pm ET, I’ll be leading a Substack LIVE on The Attention Crisis: Weapons of Mass Distraction, with my old friend and much admired colleague D. Graham Burnett, professor at Princeton and co-author of the manifesto Attensity, alongside my wife and media guru Julia Allison, fellow at Harvard’s Shorenstein Center for Media, Politics and Public Policy.
Graham is one of the most amazing people I’ve ever known: a polymath intellectual, a fascinating artist, and in recent years a leading attention activist, focused laser-like on historicizing the idea of attention while fighting to keep it in our hands and away from the platforms who want it to control it in order to sell us stuff and earn profits for their shareholders.
We’ll talk about about what attention is, where it comes from, why it matters, and how its erosion affects us in nearly every imaginable way.
As always, my goal here on Substack is to make sense of forces that shape our shared lives. Attention is fundamentally linked to meaningful experience, including the experiences of judgment and democracy itself.

I hope you’ll join us and bring your questions. Especially in a distracted age, conversation is among the most potent, sustainable forms of sustained thought.
Warmly,
Noah
